Step up rings allow you to attach bigger size filters or other camera accessories to the front of your lens that has a smaller filter thread size.

Step down rings, on the other hand, do the opposite by allowing smaller sized filters to fit on lenses with a bigger filter thread size.

A spacing ring adds space between the filter and the lens allowing the proper optical alignment between certain lens and filter combination’s.
